Sip Resto Lounge
1117 Granville Street
This was probably one of the most spontaneous dinner plans. We were walking downtown, while using the dineout search option to find this place (which was the closest one to us).
I didn’t read any reviews about this place before coming, so everything is based on my first impression without others’ judgment. And another note, please excuse the pictures. It was really dim in there, and if you guys didn’t know already I took these photos with my iPhone because I want to represent the student life (without all the fancy cameras).
When we first walked in, it was quite busy already. The reservations were full for the time we went (6pm-ish), but we were offered a seat at the bar. Beebs and I were too hungry to object so we just settled on that. The bartender was exceptionally sweet and attended to us quickly. We got a the Big Surf Laid Back Lager (beer) to start. And mm, that was delicious even on an empty stomach. I’m not a strong advocate on alcohol, but this was an exception.
Obviously, we went with the DineOut menu. Beebs and I got the same dishes, except for dessert. We both had the beef carpaccio to start.
Compared to another beef carpaccio I had, this was a lot drier but everything was there: flavour and all. I thought the aioli worked well with it. Too bad the portions were so small!!
For the entree, we got the stuffed pork tenderloin. This really disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but I was expecting a lot more from the description. I thought it was a little bland; it was missing the little oomph I was looking for. But overall it was ‘good’: the pork was tender and the sauce complemented it.
The dessert was the most entertaining part for us. I ordered the New York cheesecake and Beebs got the chocolate cake. We ended up trading because I loved the richness of the chocolate. It might not be for everyone but that dark chocolate melting on my tongue was a delight. The cheesecake wasn’t bad either. It had a smooth texture and wasn’t overly sweet.
Despite the reviews on Urbanspoon, I’m still giving this a place a thumbsup. Based on my experience, I had a great time. The service was awesome! The waiters were attentive, that when a spot was freed up, they moved us over to a proper dining table. They came at appropriate times to check up on us and such. I really don’t have anything bad to say about them except it might be a little pricey for the amount of food you get. I’m actually considering to have my birthday here.
Oh and a fun note, I thought it was really unique that they had unisex washrooms. No it’s not one stall, but many stalls in one for men and women. You know why I love that? No prejudice on any sexuality you identify with. Gotta give them a brownie point for being open-minded.
